Wearable Straps

Help make straps to make the shields wearable!
Tutorials Below

How it works:

  1. Choose what you want to make:  visors , foam, or straps. Note: you need a 3D printer to make the visors.
    1. Watch or read the linked tutorials first to see which you would like to make!
  2. Sign up to make your parts in the form below.
  3. We will supply you with materials needed to make your parts.
    1. For the printed visor, we will supply you with PLA filament. You must have access to your own 3D printer!
    2. For the foam forehead cushions, we will supply you with foam and packaging tape.
    3. For the straps, we will supply you with strap webbing, rubber bands, and super glue.
  4. Begin making your parts and every week we will collect your parts for assembly! You can either drop off your parts at a core team member's house or one of us can pick them up from your front porch.
    1. If you are printing parts, the expectations of production will depend on your own printing capacity. A production of at least 25 visors per week would be a good minimum to shoot for (but more is greatly welcomed!)
    2. If you are making foam forehead cushions or wearable straps, you should be making at least 50 parts per week. This is likely to translate to less than 2 hours of labor per week. Again, making more is greatly welcomed!
    3. Please place your produced parts in plastic shopping or garbage bags and close them up before giving them to a core team member. This is done to minimize the risk of contamination in transportation.
  5. If you want to make multiple parts, you are welcome to do so. However, please only sign up for what you can handle!
    1. If you print visors and make forehead cushions and/or straps, you should attach these parts to your printed visor before giving them to us.
    2. If you make both forehead cushions and straps but not printed visors, please bag the foam and the straps in separate bags before giving them to us.
    3. We are not currently seeking any assemblers because we are the ones with the materials to make the actual shields of these face shields and because we have to perform quality control on the parts you provide us and the final shields.

Printed Visors

Print the provided .stl file flat side down (you might have to rotate the object in your slicer) at 0.3mm layer height without supports or rafts.

Legacy (older v2 design) and experimental files are included (such as one cut into thirds for very small printers). An official 2-part .stl will be coming soon for printers that cannot fit the visor in one piece!

Foam Forehead Cushions

Materials. 8 inches of 1/2"x3/4" vinyl foam tape, 2 inch wide clear packaging tape, scissors
  1. Cut 8 inches of the foam tape.
  2. Cut about 10 inches of packaging tape and place it sticky side up. Put the foam tape down in the middle.
  3. Cut another 10 inches of packaging tape and place it on top of the foam sticky side down.
  4. Press down the tape to create a pillow shaped sandwich and completely seal the foam. The sealed foam should resemble a pillow shape.
  5. Trim off the excess tape.

Wearable Straps

Materials. 1/2" wide webbing (2 7" straps), scissors, super glue, 2 rubber bands, clothespins or clips
Steps:
  1. Cut 2 7" straps from 1/2" wide webbing. Burn the edges with a lighter to keep the straps from fraying.
  2. Feed one strap through the 2 rubber bands and add glue to the end of the strap.
  3. Fold the strap over the rubber bands and clip the strap down while the glue dries.
  4. Repeat for the other side. Remove the clips when the glue finishes drying (at least a few minutes).

Reference Video

This video shows how to assemble the V2 design. The new V3 design mostly follows the same assembly procedures except the disclaimer labels and 3 mil lamination parts are no longer needed.
